The reservations can be sent to Jim Anderson by snail mail at 822 E. Indiana St., Rapid City, SD, 57701-5835. You can also make reservations by Email at Igloo.SD@gmail.com. Also by phone at (605) 342-2758 and leave a message on the answering machine. If you could make your reservation by the 4th of July it would help us in planning the seating and the meal. We will also be making name tags for you and your guests so we will need their names also. If you prepay, the price is $10.00 per person for the Saturday night meal. If you pay at the door, the price is $15.00 per person. If you prepay, please make the checks out to PHS Alumni Association.
The Igloo Reunion will be held the next day at the same location (July 20, Legion Club) from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Several items will be on display including old newspapers, photos of workers, blueprints of depot and housing area, telephone books, etc.
You may have noticed the prepaid price has been lowered to $10. This is actually lower than the cost, but I wanted to use some of the funds to give back to the attendees. Sandy (Cooley) Copland (61) sent a generous donation, that will appear in the next newletter, which will cover most of the difference, so thank her.
It has been decided that we need a sound system. I think for this year we will rent one and then decide if we want to buy one and what size it should be. I think the Dan Goodman fund will be used for this.
We have changed the name of the Igloo Picnic to the Igloo Reunion, perhaps it is time to think about changing the Provo High Alumni reunion to the Provo School reunion. We have not generated a new alumni in 47 years, of course we have not generated a new student in that many years also. When the school closed in 1967 there were 5 students in kindergarten, they would have been the class of 79. The Provo School District existed about 55 years, 30 before WWII and 25 after. Many of those early students ended up working at BHOD or sending their children to Provo School later.
Just got an email from Louie DeLeon and it reminded me of how many PHS alumni went on to coach State Championship Teams.
WANTED: We are looking for some more people to help with the reunion; newsletter, setup, registration, program, etc. My contact information is above if you would be interested in helping.
Wild Bill Hickok connection to Provo School. A month or so before his death in Deadwood, Hickok entered the Black Hills on the 1876 Cheyenne to Custer Stage route. This route went through center of the area that became BHOD (just east of the igloos) There was a stage station located there called Alum Spring, among other names. One story about Hickok's trip stated they spent the night there. Much later (1910 era) the homesteaders built a school house using the logs from the old stage station. This was located about one igloo away from the one that exploded in the 1950's. This was upgraded to a frame building built a little to the NE on the school section. It was called the Soft Water School and was part of the Provo School district. In 1942 it was moved to Provo and combinded with the Provo School and remains today.
